Think Tank wins LABC Chair’s award

16 June 2009

“It’s a super building” – that’s what the Chair of Local Authority Building Control (LABC) thought of Lincoln’s newest building for innovative businesses at the regional Building Excellence Awards on Friday 12th June.

Think Tank was nominated in the ‘Best Commercial Building over £1 million’ category, but walked away with the Chair’s Award – making it the personal favourite across all categories of Chair of LABC Mick Henman.

Just two days after Think Tank was officially opened, the awards highlighted it as a stand-out building in the East Midlands, competing with four other buildings in its category.

When declaring Think Tank as the award winner, Mr Henman said: “The Chairs award this year goes to Think Tank in Lincoln. This is my personal award I was asked to look at all the finalists without knowing the winners and select my favourite building.  It was not easy to separate some very good projects and chose a winner.  The Think Tank I thought not only looks good, but stands out for its sustainable design. It embraces practical sustainable construction principles.”

Although Think Tank was pipped to the top prize in its category by the £50 million Leicester complex The Curve, Director of Development and Environmental Services, John Latham, was very pleased with being presented with the Chairman’s Award.

“Think Tank as a building speaks for itself,” said John.  “It’s a stunning structure both inside and out, and with its fantastic green credentials and the technology involved, I’m sure it will continue to be a stand-out building way into the future.”

Backed by the City of Lincoln Council, East Midlands Development Agency, Lincolnshire County Council, Lincolnshire Enterprise, Innovation Lincolnshire and the European Regional Development Fund, Think Tank provides managed workspace for innovative businesses, boasting 21 offices and nine workspaces, along with conference and meeting facilities available for hire.

Councillor Hilton Spratt, Portfolio Holder for Economy, Tourism and Culture, said: “Following the very successful launch of Think Tank, to receive this recognition for the building is tremendous.  Think Tank is an exciting building and I am delighted its innovative design has been recognised by the LABC East Midlands.”
