History

Lincoln Think Tank is located within the Brayford Enterprise Park, on the historically important site used for the prototype testing of the original military tank – one of the most significant innovations of the 20th century. The tank was invented and produced by William Foster Company of Wellington Street Foundry, Lincoln.

Concealing the identity of the weapon during the development and testing of the first tracked, armoured fighting vehicles was of paramount importance and they were initially called water carriers for Mesopotamia. This was shortened to tank, as in water tank and it is this name that has described the vehicles ever since.

It is therefore fitting that the 21st century should see another ground-breaking development on the site, to nurture the culture of innovation and the high skill levels within Lincoln and surrounding area.

The tank affiliation has informed the design and name of the building, as well as all the signage and building logo. One elevation has track-like staggered walls replicating tank treads, whilst the main entrance elevation has the curves and rivets that emulate a tank turret. In addition the choice of Rockpanel Chameleon as the exterior cladding gives the building a multi-coloured, camouflage-like quality that changes its tone from greens, bronze and black according to daylight levels.
